Terminal chaos

There is no denying that London Gatwick airport hosts a huge number of flights for everyone's summer holidays, but its always so busy it drives me crazy. On my most recent flight we travelled from the North Terminal with Easyjet on an early morning flight.

The check in queues are always massive with people not being sure where to stand or where to join, ask staff for help and they are just rude, then comes the long queue to go through passport control, whilst dodging the people who are having to re-arrange their hand luggage into clear plastic bags, then you get through passport control and you reach another long queue for security and have to practically get undressed, you get through there and enter the "shopping centre" yet there are so many people you cant actually see the shops, and then comes the 10 mile trek to your boarding gate.

Gatwick serves its purpose for holiday makers and package holiday flights, but its far too chaotic, another terminal needed.....

London Gatwick, avoid when possible!

London Gatwick is an airport below expectations. The airport is in a great location being less than 30 miles south of Central London. Located near to the M23 motorway and with regular running trains and busses/coaches from the South terminal, generally transport links to and from the airport are good, but are not great from the North terminal. The entire airport, particually the interior of the South terminal is old and quite dirty, with some general dirt and litter around. Both before and after security, as well as near arrivals consists of an adequate amount and variety of shops, food outlets, restaurants with the addition of many other facillities, but for an airport of that size, I expected much more. Queues are always a big problem, with check-in rarely being quicker than 15 or 20 minutes, security up to 30 minutes and passport control normally taking at least 10 or 15 minutes. Baggage reclaim is also on the slow side, taking up to 10 to arrive and that is on top of the 10 or 15 minutes spent at passport control. Overall, London Gatwick is a poor airport which has fewer facillities than it should and major problems with queues.

The North Terminal is soo much better

Thankfully my flight with Easyjet was from the North terminal and is a lot quieter than the South. After booking my car in at Parking at Gatwick Airport, I was taken to the terminal building.

The terminal is well set out with plenty of monitors so you can easily find your check-in desk.

Going through security was easy and quick as we had an early morning flight.

There are plenty of restaurants and duty free shops when you get through security and a couple of good bars. The departure gates are all quite close to the terminal so there was only about a 5 minute walk for us to board the plane.

If you want an easy relaxing start to your holiday, then make sure you book a flight from the North Terminal.
