This flight was one of several Premium Economy flights I have made in recent months with Virgin and I am still asking myself the question...."Is it worth the extra ?"
.
Speaking as someone who is travelling for business (not pleasure) and paying for the ticket myself it's not an easy decision to spend the extra (quite considerable extra in most cases). However, I am making long haul flights and have busy schedules waiting for me at either end of the flights so I thought it would be worthwhile.
After making several trips with Virgin Premium Economy I can only conclude that you get a better seat, full stop.
Yes, you do get priority boarding and a little drink served before take off. But as for anything else forget it. It's the seat that's it.
Oh also, if you find yourself sitting in Premium Economy on a flight to China DO NOT BE SURPRISED to find everyone on the flight using the toilet in the cabin. The cabin crew do nothing to stop this and it is very annoying - especially if you happen to be seated near to the damn thing.
In conclusion Premium Economy = better seat, that's it.
PLEA TO VIRGIN - ask your cabin crew to treat people in Premium Economy with at least the pretend care of a supurior class of cabin and not just an extension of economy. The conclusion will be we will stop paying the extra.

I have flown with Virgin to the Far East and the Caribbean and rated them as good as or better than the competition but after this return trip to Barbados, I would try another airline for my next long-haul trip. They are competitive on price but on everything else the standard has really deteriorated. The planes were old and shabby, really uncomfortable seats as any padding had been worn away. The in-flight entertainment choices were poor and the system is not nearly as up-do-date as other airlines. Why did they change to the February films etc before the end of January so the selection was the same on the return leg in February? And the on-screen film menu selection was not the films in the magazine listing, which were actually the ones being shown - shambles. The food was very poor and by the time less than half the passengers had been served, there was no choice any more. The snack before landing/breakfast was almost inedible. Staff were almost invisible for most of the flight, very basic on the "pleasant and helpful" scale and morale seemed low. My seat was changed after on-line check-in on the return, because I was not able to print my boarding pass. On the outbound flight I was moved from an aisle to a window but managed to switch to an aisle at check-in.
OK, none of these things is a real disaster but they do add up to a not-great experience and is a long way from the service and comfort I've had with Virgin in the past, never mind what they advertise. No longer my first choice for long-haul travel.

Delayed baggage was a serious problem when we flew into Barbados from Manchester. The baggage handlers at Barbados could not confirm where my bag was. However they did say they would try and find it but could not confirm when! We were offered no compensation to buy toiletries or fresh clothes. After 2 days I decided to buy clothes and claim back the cost on our return to the UK. remember this is 90 degree Barbados not Blackpool. Once back in the UK all I can say is I have never come across such an inept company to deal with, they basically could not grasp the disappointment and inconvenience we suffered, and that includes the Chief Executive Office. The bottom line after 8 weeks correspondence we were offered £32 in compensation and if not satisfied to pursue the matter further with our insurance company. One very hacked off customer who will not be flying Virgin again!G

All I can say is that Virgin Atlantic are not the best but are by no means the worst.
Flying in economy is not that comfortable but for the price it gets you there. Food has declined with the new catering service and it is hard to eat what they dish up.
Overall I think the 747's are getting a bit dated now and some of the newer planes will improve the service a lot.

Travelled with Virgin from Manchester to Barbados and return – VS077 and VS078 in October 2011. Both trips on 'Ladybird'. Outbound we were in seats 64 H and K. Seats were comfortable enough but the seat in front would not stay upright at all during the flight, even for takeoff and landing. The IFE didn't work. It took three hours for the system to be re-loaded but even then we couldn't use it properly because of the faulty handsets. Noticed on return that the faulty seat was still faulty, as were the handsets. My diabetic meal was delivered at least 15 minutes before my wife's standard meal and it turned out to be food that diabetics are told to steer clear of – lots of high GI carbohydrates. The second meal on the flight was a white bread sandwich (high GI) and a thin slice of tomato and a minute piece of lettuce inside. Yuk. But my wife's was chicken in granary bread – perfect for a diabetic!!!!
The return flight was just the same, meals delivered at different times, handsets and IFE not working (different seats) and even though cabin crew said they would re-load the system, they never did. This time my seat would not stay in an upright position and I got told off by cabin crew for having it lowered when it wouldn't stay upright. Diabetic meal on the return flight was high GI carbohydrates again.
It is ten years since we flew with Virgin and the quality has slipped tremendously in that time.

We flew with Virgin Atlantic in Premium Economy. First time using the Premium Economy service and would not go back. The cabin crew were a delight, in flight entertainment made the 9 hour journey fly in. Meals were excellent. My only criticism is for the vegetarian options which were quite poor by comparison. I was given a 'sandwich' consisting of two slices of bread, lettuce and tomato at one point! Another great bonus was being able to disembark the plane before the other passengers. This is a life saver in the USA as you can be the first ones to whisk through customs... otherwise you are in for a very long wait!

Very good value for money, if booked in advance, the cabin crew very polite and the flight very smooth. The flight was on time and landed on time. I never felt more comfortable on the plain before. I would certainly recommend Virgin Atlantic as every time choice. I will definitely flight with them again. Thank you Virgin Atlantic

I had taken a 12 day cruise of the British Isles, and was now flying back to the U.S. I had booked my flights with Virgin Atlantic approximately one year in advance in order to obtain a good fare and a choice seat. I received both at the time of booking. As a matter of fact, our seat assignments were the two best in economy.
I tried to reconfirm my flight from London to JFK for several hours but could not do so due to the high computer demand on a ship with over 3,000 passengers. Our cell phones were not working in Great Britain so I could not call to reconfirm.
When we arrived at the airport directly from the ship I was stunned to find out that those great seats were taken from us, and we were given the two worst seats on the aircraft(last row centre). This was done because of our failure to reconfirm our flights.
When I returned home I e-mailed complaint after complaint to Virgin Atlantic on their horrendous practice. I received stock insincere apologies. With their main point being that seats are not guaranteed and you must reconfirm. They did not address the major point that it was very difficult for me to do so. I recently read an article that stated that Virgin Atlantic is the only airline that punishes their passengers in such a manner. It mentioned that in some way it saves them money in the number of ticket agents required
This is a shameful policy that is highly discriminatory against tourists leaving London who very often will have difficulty reconfirming their flight. I certainly will never use an airline that is so contemptuous of its passengers.
Very angry and disgusted passenger

Really dissatisfied with our recent flight from London to Orlando, virgin telephone agent omitted to ask or tell us or include our child's kids meal that had to be prebooked, told on outbound flight that the kids meal would definitely be prebooked for return leg flight but wasn't, our child understandably didn't like the adult choices (hot curry or beef and potatoes) so went hungry for the entire flight, cabin crew really unfriendly and unhelpful, one of our entertainment systems didn't work for duration of flight and our complaints went unheard, stewardess wouldn't send the manager over to speak to us, refused to move us to alternative seating despite the flight only being half full, offered one drink during entire 9 hour flight, supposed to be complimentary bar drinks throughout flight, only offered one with the evening meal, food was cold and tasteless, put call button on for some water for our child and a stewardess did not attend to us for 1.5 hours, really terrible service, would never travel with Virgin again, have flown with BA to Orlando previously, would book with them every time from now on, when considering who to book with, choose BA every time, Virgin are a disgrace, the amount of people sitting around us complaining about the poor service of the crew and the rubbish food quality was unbelievable.

The flight was delayed for an hour and on the way back it was delayed for 2 hours, so I wasn't very impressed. I didn't really enjoy the food, if I wanted to get a drink all I had to do was press a button on the controller, I had a wide selection of films, games and music for my entertainment to choose from. I had a lot of leg room, the toilets were always occupied so that kind of annoyed me. The headphones they gave us weren't very good, so I just used my own. They took forever too take away the food so we had to stay in a cramped position with the food on our trays until they came and took it away. Other than that the flight was great.

Cabin crew friendly and caring and very attentive, in fact they couldn't do enough for us and made the flight that much more enjoyable. Entertainment was excellent, food not to bad, lots of leg room and was given a goody bag with eye mask, socks, pen, toothbrush and toothpaste. It's the little things that make all the difference. I would recommend Virgin Atlantic Airline to everyone.

Being over 6 foot in height, the thought of a 9 hour flight in economy didn't exactly thrill me, but I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of leg room. Believe me, it wasn't that I had a lot of room, but it didn't feel too cramped.
In flight entertainment was okay with large choice of films and music. I was slightly disappointed that the promised gaming console was not in use, but my children did have hand held consoles.
The Cabin crew were very helpful when called upon, and the catering was above average for the two meals provided in flight.

The air stewardesses were not caring at all. They are supposed to look after passengers on aircraft. Sadly, it is not the case nowadays. I asked for a cup of hot water but the air stewardess had forgotten it all together. On previous occasion, the upholstery was missing from my seat and it was very uncomfortable during the 13 hours flight. But I would not be moved to another seat because it was full in the economy class. I thought that I should have been upgraded to the front. I felt like I sat on a piece of wood for that 13 hours. It illustrated that the airline did not carry out any visual check on the condition of their seats.

I am a frequent flier with Virgin Atlantic and I am fortunate enough to be able to fly in their Upper Class cabin. This means you are able to make full use of the Virgin Clubhouse at Gatwick Airport. Its worth mentioning, that the Clubhouse recently underwent a refurbishment and is a vast improvement on its predecessor.
Once I had enjoyed the comforts of the clubhouse, cook breakfast and an awesome neck, shoulder and back massage - all complementary of course, I boarded the flight and was greeted by a glass of champers and a rather grumpy flight attendant. As the flight progressed, said grumpy crew member did turn out to be quite lovely.
The flight passed without incident and was smooth for most of the 10 hours. As usual the catering was excellent as was the service. My only niggle is that the 747's are getting a bit tired now and the condition of the interiors is becoming very rough around the edges. The in flight entertainment system is also in need of an upgrade to the V:PORT system.
In summary an 'Virgin Atlantic' flight experience, just reminds me why I always fly Virgin and why I DON'T fly British Airways.

I was travelling with two young children which can be very stressfull. The cabin crew were excellent with the children. My son (age 7) is very fusy with food and they accomodated him well. He was asleep when they brought the main meal but said just to ring the bell when he woke and they would bring him something that he would eat.
Very kind staff and understanding when it comes to travelling with children. Thanks

The whole experience was wonderful with one exception. The food was not in keeping with Upper Class expectations. As someone who doesn't have a big appetite, this was a disappointment rather than a problem. Soggy pastry, chewy beef and tasteless vegetables do not a gastronomic delight make.
However, the attention of the crew and their willingness to help was first class. From plumping up cushions to cups of tea at any time, they were polite and caring, every one of them.

This was a birthday treat from my partner, and the first time both of us flew upper class. We were made very welcome and absolutely nothing was too much for the excellent friendly crew on board. The crew had a chat with us while we were sitting at the bar and gave up helpful hints on where to shop and eat in New York. The use of the Clubhouse at Heathrow made a wonderful start to a wonderful flight. Would love to go upper class again!!!!

We sat right at the back which has no overhead controls for air flow. Although there was a wide choice of films available to watch, you had no say as when you could watch them from the beginning as you can on many airlines, as they had already began when the backseat monitors were switched on. The hand controls for the entertainment were fixed to the side of the seat and not removable making it almost impossible to use them in a seated position.
Our aisle seemed to be the last to get served with everything from meals to snacks and drinks. The opposite side getting served up to an hour before us. On both meal times they had run out of food options before reaching us.
They ran out of beer and white wine 4 hrs into a 9 1/2 hr flight after we had only had one drink each and the cabin crew all looked miserable most of the time.
More what I would expect from a no frills flight than what is supposed to be a world leader.

The planes are always comfortable and the crew are professional. In-flight entertainment is excellent and the food is ok for airline food. The prices for flights to Antigua which we take regularly are always in line with BA who also fly there but we would always choose Virgin Atlantic over BA having been "bumped" from a flight home by them once before. Any delays are dealt with efficiently and cannot always be helped by the airline. We tend to look out for regular sales and buy flights then.

Really no complaints bearing in mind the cost. It was a night flight which I don't particularly like but managed to get some sleep. Food and beverages were most welcome and pleasant and all served with a smile.
The staff on the ground at Heathrow were all very smart and helpful.
Arrival into Hong Kong was fine with staff offering every assistance. However getting through immigration was a nightmare but obviously nothing that Virgin can do about that.

Something weird is going on with Virgin Atlantic, I used to refuse to go anywhere long haul unless I could fly with them. These days however, it seems they are really cutting back to save money and the in flight extras are really 'cheap' and the food is awful. Such a shame, try harder please, I would be more than happy to pay an extra tenner or so to get better quality food and a nicer comfort pack.

Virgin Economy is OK. Leg room is not brilliant and choice of TV was not great. Films were on a continuous loop rather than choosing one. However the big plus was the Cabin Crew. They were very courteous and did not treat you with contempt because you were travelling economy. You could also get free drinks at any time throughout the flight.
Overall it is not a bad product and I got quite a cheap deal because I was able to book through the code sharing Continental Airlines. I quite like Virgin Atlantic. They are by no means the worst I have flown with.

On the returning night flight there were loads of empty seats so we were able to stretch out. However we were severely delayed in high temperatures waiting for permission to fly. The crew kept us topped up with water.

I always think that Virgin Atlantic flights are very average, until I fly another airline, then you realise they are the best! Everything this very well organised and the crews very efficient. Even the food, though still a bit "plastic", is more than edible. I choose to fly Virgin, even though it means I have to fly from Heathrow rather than the much closer Manchester, which says a lot!

Cabin Crew were great with my children - my youngest was 1 on the outward flight and 2 on the return! Bit awkward in terms of they provide the children's food first but do not remove their trays before the adult food comes. I was left with my 1 year old daughter and 6 years old sons' tray and then had to put this on the floor to have mine! Not ideal to have the children's trays after they have eaten the food as they move allot! But don't know how this would be fixed on a busy flight.

My family and I fly to Orlando annually and always make the long flight over with VA. Much to the other passengers disgust we always fly in Upper Class with the kids.
The flight always begins for me in the Virgin Clubhouse lounge, which has been recently refurbished. Having a young family of three, soon to be four children we always make great use of the 'kids area'. With the refurbishment this has been moved to the back of the lounge, I guess to avoid disturbing the other guests and now comes complete with, what I affectionately call the padded cell, a sound proof room the kids can run riot in. One of the walls is glass so you can see in
As always the flight was great and the crew are always very attentive with the kids, making sure they don't get too bored and even taking the time to sit with them for some of the flight, so my wife and I can get five minutes peace, to eat our meals.
Virgin have always struck me as a family airline, but it does surprise me how pleased they are having children in Upper Class, even when it's full of adults who look like they chose to fly Upper to escape the children. Muhaha.
The upper Class service it's self cannot be faulted, your never left hungry or thirsty. There is always a crew member or two about to grab if you need anything. If you book these flights every enough they represent excellent value for money. I think we have paid £1400 return including taxes for an upper class seat in the past. It's a bargain for what you get.
Would I use them again? Of course, I already have 2 more flights booked.

I went to Florida last year with Virgin Atlantic. We went premium economy and it was well worth it. We managed to get bulk head seats at check in, which meant our legroom was increased even more so than the normal premium economy seats. We were treated with the utmost respect and all our needs were catered for.
This experience has made us want to upgrade our seats in future. No more economy class for us!

We travelled in economy to MCO with Virgin, the planes are in well need of a refurb, seats were tatty and the plane was grubby but we didn't pay huge amounts for the flight. The cabin crew were great though, attentive and helpful really made the flight.

We had to cut short our holiday because of a relative being taken into hospital with terminal cancer. We needed to get back in a hurry as time was short but from first explaining to our Virgin rep to getting so all were so helpful. Arriving at the airport the Airline crew and staff were aware of our situation and kept us calm (or as calm as we could be). Made sure my partner and I had seating together somewhere quiet. Kept asking if we were ok and I cannot ever thank them enough.

My girlfriend, another couple and myself flew to Las Vegas for 10 nights for a 21st birthday. Checking in was a breeze as we did it through the self service check in. After we checked in we decided to see if there was any upgrades, for £50 each we upgraded to premium economy. Paying the extra money was well worth it.
The service on the flight from the cabin crew wasn't as good as we had previously had, but it wasn't terrible service either.
The service on the flight coming back was much better than going out.
We would defiantly use Virgin Atlantic again.

Everything about The Flight / Service was excellent. For a first flight the experience it was what you would want, I really felt that I could have stayed on the plane. The return journey albeit one tinged with sadness having had such a wonderful holiday was also superb. The Staff were really very nice and nothing was too much trouble.

Service was at best slow, at worst surly, the crew served those with special diets, premium class, then served economy about an hour later, tea and coffee arrived one side of the plane, but not the other, they would not even give the children sweets, if they were not in the two seats on 'their' side of the plane. Overall the flight was comfortable, but the crew need some serious customer training.

Cramped and uncomfortable and the food was very average. My laptop was lost during the flight and VA did very little to locate or give me any refund whatsoever. Airplane was cancelled on my return from the USA with a few vouchers, nothing in the way of free flights or refunds...very tawdry operation. Also the bag restrictions were ridiculous.
